Florida Police Draw Guns On Legal Carrying Men

Gun rights advocates are livid after Miami Beach Police on Sunday briefly detained a group of fishermen on a public pier over questions on their holstered handguns.

The anglers, members of Sunshine State gun rights group Florida Carry, are shown in a live-streamed video of the event being interviewed by responding officers who have their sidearms drawn. While the advocates, who were ultimately released after two hours, hold they were within their rights as state law allows for legal open carry while hunting or fishing, police feel they responded within guidelines.

“Given the current climate, if six people show up to a pier in South Beach carrying guns, our citizens expect us to respond promptly and address any potential danger,” Miami Beach Police Chief Daniel Oates told the Miami Herald. “We did so, and I am confident our officers acted appropriately.”

One of only a handful of states without a provision for legal open carry, the option of bringing a holstered handgun along while fishing in public has long been a tactic used by supporters of the concept to exercise their rights. In 2011, Guns.com reported on a group of 100 such advocates in Venice, Florida as well as subsequent events held in conjunction with Florida Carry over the years. Earlier this year some 250 “openly bearing arms and fishing poles” were on hand in Ocala.

The group, who has unsuccessfully fought both the state Supreme Court and the legislature over open carry, isn’t backing down from the latest incident. Eric Friday, an attorney for Florida Carry who successfully sued the city of Tampa over a similar 2015 caseof a detained fisherman with a handgun, warned Miami Beach Police that their officers had committed an aggravated assault in their actions and is reportedly seeking more information about the interaction.

Florida’s laws are some of the DUMBEST in the country. Felons do not open carry!
Best example of needless harm caused by this dumb law is the Trayvon, No Limit Ni**er, Martin case. NO WAY he would have attacked and tried to kill Zimmerman with his bare hands IF HE KNEW Zimmerman had a firearm. That was not Trayvon’s style.

    • Linda Miller

I was so upset over the verdict on Zimmerman. He deserved life in prison at the least. He killed a 16 yr old boy with a bag of skittles and soft drink.

      • David Fenn

Nope, actually he shot that young man in self defense to keep his head from being bashed into the concrete sidewalk anymore. Trayvon Martin assaulted Mr. Zimmerman and the victim responded appropriately. In the State of Florida if someone is trying to kill you, then you are permitted by law to use lethal force.

        • Linda Miller

I wish he had succeeded in his attempts to free himself from Zimmerman. Zimmerman was told not to follow him by the police and he disobeyed orders. Zimmerman was the aggressor, not Trayvon. Trayvon had the right to defend himself against Zimmerman but he didn’t have a gun.

          • Trust No One

You are a typically ignorant Libtard. The entire UNEDITED audio tape was available on the internet. It may still be.
Zimmerman immediately stopped following No Limit, which he was doing to obtain the information the dispatcher ASKED HIM FOR) as soon as the dispatcher told him “you don’t NEED to do that”. Zimmerman was walking BACK to his Truck when No Limit rushed him, knocked him down WAS ON TOP OF ZIMMERMAN trying to bash Zimmerman’s head open against the sidewalk while all the while Zimmerman could be heard on recordings of other calls to the police screaming for help. It was only when No Limit discovered that Zimmerman had a HIDDEN gun and started trying to take it from him – obviously to kill him- that No Limit was shot once in the struggle.
THERE WAS NO DISPUTE over these facts. Even No Limit’s GF who was on the phone with him verified that No Limit had reached his fathers house but decided to go BACK and attack Zimmerman — SOMETHING HIS GF told him NOT TO DO.

            9-1-1 dispatcher:

“Alright, what address are you parked in front of?” [3:21]

            Zimmerman:

            “Um, I don’t know. It’s a cut-through so I don’t know the address.” [3:25]

            9-1-1 dispatcher:

“OK, do you live in the area?”

            Zimmerman:

            “Yeah, yeah, I live here.”

            9-1-1 dispatcher:

            “OK, what’s your apartment number?”

            Zimmerman:

            “It’s a home. It’s 1950 – oh, crap, I don’t want to give it out – I don’t know where this kid is [inaudible]” [3:40]

            9-1-1 dispatcher:

“OK, do you just want to meet with them at the mailboxes then?” [3:42]

            Zimmerman:

            “Yeah, that’s fine.” [3:43]

            9-1-1 dispatcher:

“Alright, George, I’ll let them know you’ll meet them at …”

            Zimmerman:

“Could you have them call me and I’ll tell them where I’m at?” [3:49]

            9-1-1 dispatcher:

            “OK, that’s no problem.”

            Zimmerman:

“My number … you’ve got it?”

            9-1-1 dispatcher:

            “Yeah, I’ve got it. 435-2400?”

            Zimmerman:

            “Yeah, you got it.”

            9-1-1 dispatcher:

“OK, no problem. I’ll let them know to call you when they’re in the area.” [4:02]

Thanks for the text and the link.
Just wanted to add that the Trayvon No Limit Ni**er [The name HE used on his social media accounts] is one of the first PURE examples of the Libtard press editing the news to create racial strife.
As stated in the “Annotation”, regarding part where the dispatcher asked

““OK, is he White, Black, or Hispanic?””

The dispatcher is questioning the race of the suspicious character later found out to be Trayvon Martin. This section of the call was actually edited by NBC to remove this question. This appeared to portray Zimmerman as a racist because it gave the impression he willingly gave the information of Trayvon’s race without question. This lead to questions on whether it was a racially motivated attack or discrimination towards the African American Martin who was killed.

            False. Strike 1

            False. Strike 2

Strike 3 – YER OUTTA HERE!

          • Linda, I don’t know you but, I hope you never get attacked and have to defend yourself by doing bodily harm, or killing, your attacker because the way you think will make the attacker the victim and you should be the one prosecuted and sent to jail.

    • Bennie Cochran

Travonn was stupid. He attacked a person he didn’t know, person he believed to be gay and an easy target …
Just another out-of-control black racist exhibiting more bad behavior. He does have a history if bad behavior …

      • Trust No One

Including a history of unprovoked attack on what he perceived to be vulnerable victims. One that comes to mind is the bus driver he beat the crap out. The police were called since it was a public transportation bus, but the driver didn’t want to press charges (anyone who lives in a Black area is always concerned about retaliation). On of course the REASON he was there was because he had been suspended from school because he would not explain where the WOMAN’s jewelry found in his locker came from.
A logical presumption was that it was from a burglary (which explains why he was “casin” houses when Zimmerman spotted him. I suppose he could have taken it in trade as part of his drug business, but most drug dealers insist on cash. Then again, it would probably been from a burglary in any event.

  • Uzi Kattan

This could have escalated out control because of anti gun idiots complaining against these fishermen openly carrying their guns which is perfectly legal.

    • mousekiller

More than likely not one gun owner un holstered their fire arm at any time. Holstered and in plain view. Some crybaby lib had no place to go hide from big bad fishermen.

  • Linda Miller

I am glad they did stop them and question them. There are too many illegals in this country and too many shootings. I would want to know what these guys are doing and why they are carrying while fishing. Are they shooting fish or carrying to defend themselves against an attack.

    • JohnHW

Would you feel the same if every time you were out driving your car, to be stopped by every cop you meet to verify you had a proper driver’s license or questioned about whether you are going to commit a felony?

      • JCWS1

        @ John,
Apparently Ms. Miller is afraid of society from her responses and also her responses tell me she might also be a few shovels short of a full load.

  • Trust No One

BTW: Given that felons cannot have a firearm plus the fact the police generally know who the “unusual suspects” are by name, anyone open carrying is obviously NOT a felon, or even someone accused of domestic violence etc.

““Given the current climate, if six people show up to a pier in South
Beach carrying guns, our citizens expect us to respond promptly and
address any potential danger,” Miami Beach Police Chief Daniel
Oates told the Miami Herald. “We did so, and I am confident our officers
    acted appropriately.””

This is the problem they were not responding based on any crime happening they were responding based on the MEDIA INDUCED PARANOIA (current climate) about people legally carrying regardless of what they are actually doing.

The fact is they showed up GUNS DRAWN as if they were responding to an active shooter call not a call about seeing someone LEGALLY open carrying.

Add in the confessions of still to be arrested and prosecuted for the crime liberals who OPENLY stated they call in false active shooter reports anytime they see ANYONE with a gun regardless of what they are doing and we can surmise that was most likely the call the police got based on their response.

We can be thankful in this case unlike a few others the police actually verified what was really going on instead of just summarily shooting them the instant the saw a gun holstered or not because of what the caller said was going on instead of what was really going on.

  • Estell Newton

We have open carry here and gun crime is lower that places without open carry. It still exists but not from those who open carry.

  • Tom

Some idiot liberal in the state I live in decided to post all over social media that if she saw anyone with a gun she was going to immediately call 911 report them to the police and spray them in their face with mace and scream help? Of course she was from California the first part of her plan worked at least she called 911 approached the person carrying in a aggressive manner when she reached into her bag three guns where drawn on her and then it went downhill for there. About that time the police pull up and arrest her of course she tries to assault the officers so the charges are piling up.. When they get her down to the station she spits, screams and kicks officers after booking they threw her in the tank with four black woman one of them a well known woman of the night known by locals as “Blackout” for obvious reasons. The woman from Cali asks her ” what are you looking at”!! Wrong question I heard the cops took 10 minutes to open the cell door it was stuck,by then raggedy Ann was ready to surrender and Blackout is a local hero!! Haha morons
